There are around 2500 moth species in the UK with only about 60 butterflies making up the order of Lepidoptera. This will be a combined presentation aimed at the beginner, looking at these beautiful insects, monitoring methods and identification. Meet in Teaching Room 5 (TR5), The Brynmor Jones Library, University of Hull.
We usually make a note of the things that we see on our excursions. When any of the above icons appear on the programme to the left, it indicates that a species list is available, either a general list covering all orders, or a list specifically for birds, plants, butterflies, dragonflies or insects. Clicking will open the list in a new browser tab.
External photo albums
Sometimes members will create online photo albums of our excursions. Clicking the camera icon will open this external website in a new browser tab.
Clicking a grid reference will open a "Google Maps" tab showing the meeting point in more detail.
Hovering over "what3words" with display a three word reference defining the meeting point to within 3 metres using the what3words Ltd. system. Clicking will open their website in a new tab and show an aerial photograph of the area.

Covid-19: In March 2020 the Hull Natural History Society decided to suspend indoor meetings and field trips until further notice.
However since July 4th gatherings of up to six people outdoors have been permitted, as long as social distancing guidelines are followed. The introduction of the “Rule of Six” on September 14th has not changed this. We therefore recommenced our programme of field meetings, subject to the condition that if more than six people wish to attend, we will split into separate groups of a maximum of six people. There will still be a small risk of infection and so you must decide, based on your personal circumstances, whether you come to the meeting. There is further guidance in our Covid notice, which can be downloaded from the Documents section of the home page.
The announcement of new national restrictions commencing on 5th November means that meetings will again have to be suspended from that date for at least four weeks.
